05-05. Participating in a discussion

Discussions can be held among students or students and the teacher in charge. The following explains how to participate in a discussion.

  1. In the Lectures window, click the discussion in which you want to participate.
  2. The discussion articles window appears. Click [Reply].

  3. The Contents return window appears.
    Type the [Title], [Main Text], and other items, and click
    .

    Click to quote text to be included in the comment.

  4. The confirmation window appears.
    If there is nothing to change, click .
  5. The discussion reply completion window appears. Read the information and click
    .
  6. The discussion articles window appears. Select [Reload] from the operation list box, and click
    .
  7. Your article is posted and displayed in the discussion articles window.
  8. You can also post a new article. Select [Post Message] from the operation list box, and click
    .

    Memo
    Some teachers may not allow you to post a new article.

  9. The BBS Article Contribution window appears.
    The rest of the procedure is the same as that for creating a reply to an article.
  10. A new article has been created.

Items in the BBS Article Contribution window

Item Description Remarks
Title Enter the title of the article.  
Main Text Enter the main text of the article.

(1) You can decorate the text.
Bold, italics, underline, font color change, background color change, left alignment, centering, right alignment, indent setting, font size
(2) You can edit the text.
Copy, past, cut, undo (redo)
(3) You can insert files and tables.
URLs can be linked.
(4) You can set the input window.
You can switch from the HTML format display to the screen image. The window size can be changed.
(5) You can use the equation editor "BrEdiMa."
Attach file Specify a file to be attached that serves as a reference for the article, if any. Click , and specify the file to be attached. If you want to attach more than one file, click and specify another file.
Notity when someone replies to your message Specify whether to receive a notice when there is a reply to your article. When "Yes" is set, the system will send a notice by e-mail when his or her article is replied.

Items in the discussion articles window

Item Description Remarks
Posting period (1) Period when the students can post their articles.  
Unread/Total (2) The number of unread articles and the total number of articles are displayed.

 

List format tabs (3) Tabs for selecting the display order of the article list [Title (Earliest)]: Only titles are displayed in tree format in chronological order.
(The latest one is displayed at the bottom of the list.)

[Title (Latest)]: Only titles are displayed in tree format starting from the thread having the latest opinion in reverse chronological order.
(The latest one is displayed at the top of the list.)

[Full text (Earliest)]: Titles and text are displayed in tree format in chronological order. (The latest one is displayed at the bottom of the list.)

[Full text (Latest)]: Titles and text are displayed in tree format starting from the thread having the latest opinion in reverse chronological order. (The latest one is displayed at the top of the list.)

[Latest]: Articles are displayed in reverse chronological order.

[Search]: You can search for articles and display them.

Operation list box (4) You can select [Reload] or [Post Message]. Reload:
Since you create or change a discussion article in a separate window, you cannot get the content of the reply or posted article reflected, unless you select [Reload] and click

.
Post Message:
You can create a new article.

Editing or deleting an article

You can delete or edit a discussion article.

Memo
Some teachers may not allow this.
  1. In the discussion articles window, click the article you want to delete.
  2. The confirmation window appears. Using this window, you can edit or delete the article.

Simple reply function

You can use the simple reply function, if so set by the teacher.

  1. Depending on the setting by the teacher, you may receive e-mail like the one shown below when a discussion article is posted or a reply is made to an article. Click the displayed URL.

    Memo
    Depending on the setting by the teacher, the URL may not be displayed. In that case, the simple reply function is not available.
  2. The Create article window appears. Enter a message, and click .

    Memo
    The Create article window does not allow you to decorate text or attach a file.
  3. The confirmation window appears. If there is nothing to change, click .

Notes on posting an article

  • Check the Posting period before you post your article. After the Posting period, you cannot post your article. Be careful.

  • The Posting period is determined by the teacher. Ask the teacher if you want to post an article before or after the Posting period. Each teacher sets discussions in his or her own way.
  • Teachers can get the record of each student’s use of individual contents. Some teachers may take the record into consideration when they give a grade.
  • Some teachers may have the setting to send their students a notice of newly posted article by e-mail.
  • Some teachers may also have photos of their faces displayed, as well as images posted by themselves.
  • Some teachers may disclose the grade. In the case where the grade is disclosed, "Notify when grades are opened" is automatically sent when the grade period disclosure is reached, if so set in the Settings windows.
